We were pleased to give this project, run by volunteers in Newsome, a grant towards the purchase of card, envelopes and glue. Community Cards  engages with elderly, lonely and isolated people to make new greetings cards from old. Recycling and providing affordable, handmade cards that are sold locally in schools, nursing homes and churches.

Once the project becomes self-financing, with sufficient card sales to purchase the next round of resources, donations from sales will be made to ‘The Welcome Centre’.” Nigel Clews (Community Cards)

Making a Difference Tameside – Furniture Project

On the theme of recycling,  we are also delighted to once again support Making a Difference with a grant to buy tools and safety equipment for their new furniture project. In conjunction with a local charity shop clients will revamp furniture that will then be resold.

Trewan Sands Children’s Trust

Once again we are pleased to support this organisation with a donation towards providing holidays for disabled and terminally children.

Participants are attending a series of six workshops (in one of four locations across Kirklees) working with designers to create a catwalk outfit exclusively recycled from charity shops on a budget of £20. The project will culminate in a fantastic fashion show at Huddersfield Town Hall on 26th April where participants will model their creations.

The One 17 Design Charitable Trust is one of the financial sponsors of this project and in addition one of our Trustees is also involved as a volunteer.

Passion 4 Fashion is a fantastic opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills and ultimately help participants move on to training and employment. It has been great to engage with the participants in the first two workshops and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they progress through the project.” Caroline Lee

We are delighted that the Travel Bursary, awarded to this year 9 pupil for outstanding commitment to school sports and leadership, gave her the opportunity to go to Austria and learn how to ski with her fellow pupils.

Caroline visited the North Huddersfield Trust School this morning to present their newly formed Book Club with copies of ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King and ‘Take Action’ from Kid Premiership.

It was wonderful to see the delight and enthusiasm of the pupils involved in the Book Club as they received their new books.
Arriving during morning break I was also really impressed by the polite and courteous welcome that I received from pupils in the playground.”

Following work in kind by One 17 GC The Welcome Centre website is now live!

Graphic designer Alan Hardy worked closely with Centre Manager Karen Selley to develop a site that explains the work of the Welcome Centre and will hopefully encourage more companies to offer regular corporate sponsorship.

In addition the site will also keep regular supporters up to date with current shortages and details of forthcoming fund raising events.
