ARTHUR QUARMBY – IN MEMORIAM

13TH MARCH 1934 - 4TH MARCH 2020

At different times Arthur was boss, colleague and business partner to the three of us. Throughout all the years we knew him he was an inspiration; someone we could admire and to whose achievements we could aspire.

His personal vision and individuality shone through in everything he did and his fierce allegiance to his West Yorkshire roots and his beloved Holme Valley put a particular slant on his work. This may seem surprising given that he worked in places as diverse as Antarctica and Hollywood but once his early wanderlust was satisfied there was no doubt he would set up practice in Huddersfield.

Perhaps best known for introducing earth-sheltered architecture to Britain, this technique was only one of his many architectural interests which also included inflatables, long-span structures and ‘Romantasy’ among others. No matter how left-field some of his ideas may have seemed on occasion, they were always supported by in-depth research and clear intellectual argument.

We learned so much from Arthur over the years and were proud to inherit his practice on his retirement.

He will be personally missed and the world of architecture diminished by his passing.
